MAIN PROGRESSES TO MAKE A LACQUER PRODUCT

Lacquer is the traditional handicraft profession of Vietnam. Possibly say that the lacquer technology has the common principle, that is Paint and Smooth, it means after carrying out painting, the next step is smoothing; repeating from 8 to 10 times of different Painting and Smoothing to make a lacquer product. To make this product, it is necessary to have experience and technique of each person or family. As well, the technique of making a painting is different from making statue, from object decoration or golden covering paint… It is possible to divide into some main progresses:

- Making shape: Bundle - Frame - Stick - Thi

- Decoration: Colored, gilt and silvery painting, etc.

- Completed product: Optical painting the first time, the second time, polishing the surface.

Bundle- Frame - Stick - Thi

In the past, people have used paper made from Rhamnoneuron (Nepal paper plant) that was very tough frame and bundle the wooden (objects need painting), its durability is better than fabrics. The way of bundling, framing, and Shaping has been carried out by: The alluvial soil (the workman can use stone powder nowadays) is mixed up with pounded paint and rice paper, then sticking, filling the cracks on the wood. Each painted layer is lined with a paper layer (or mosquito-nets material layer), then gills-shaped mortising to pin and glue paint for the cross-wooden strips behind the wooden plank to avoid the layer to be cracked. Then, as the wood totally is dry, paint-framing two sides. This progress is to protect the plank from absorption, worm-eaten and the wood is not shrunk by the environment. The more careful the plank processed, the longer the object needs painting is, the longevity of each lacquer product is about 50-100 years. There is a smooth between the bundling and framing layer. It is possible dry-smooth (using sand-paper) or wet-smooth. After the Shape made through Bundle and Frame, the craftman will completely examine all surfaces of processed product. On the surface, if the cracks or uneven spots are availble, the craftman will reach the Stick progress. The effect of sticking process is to make the surface of the product completely flat and smooth. After bundling, the craftman will carry our the Thi process 1 and 2. This process makes gloss level for the surface of product to create for the decorative process.

When having the products with the shape mentioned above (or engraving models for vases and other articles), the craftsman would carry out drawing and attaching nacre, or coloring materials to the products, such as: Egg shell, nacre, silver, etc. then cover with a layer of paint, after that flat the, then use color paint to cover the product.

With such painting technique for statues and interior articles as: Incense table, horizontal lacquered board, parallel sentences, etc. the craftsman must work in a closed room bound around to prevent the wind from blowing the materials: Golden litmus, silver litmus; and prevent dust from adhering on the wet paint.

Completed products

Because the shining oil has been colored, the shine is hidden, making the depth of each product, thus after each time of drawing, it needs polishing. The ancients used dried banana leaves as draft. Today, the principle of polishing the paint for the last time has no alternative to the manual method because this type of paint is not admitted to cover with shining oil. That is the unique character of lacquer painting. The success of a lacquer painting depends much on the last stage.

Some materials to polish: grinded bead-tree charcoal, ruffled hair, etc.
